Richard Leroy, based in Rablay sur Layon in the Anjou Noir, has become one of the most respected names in dry chenin blanc. A former bookseller turned vigneron, he works two great vineyards, Les Noëls de Montbenault and Clos des Rouliers, both rooted in schist and volcanic rock that give the wines striking mineral precision. Viticulture is rigorous, organic and deeply sensitive to natural balance. Yields are low, ripeness is carefully judged and vinification is minimalist with native yeasts and long élevage. The wines display quince, fresh apple, ripe lemon, warm stone, white flowers and occasionally a smoky hint. The palate is linear, vibrant and razor sharp, driven by intense minerality and exceptional length. The Richard Leroy style is pure, luminous and uncompromising, with a rare clarity of terroir.
