Pierre Beauger, based in the volcanic landscapes of Auvergne near Montpeyroux, is a near mythical figure in French natural wine. Working entirely alone on tiny parcels of very old vines planted on basalt, volcanic ash and sandy soils, he produces wines of striking individuality, poetry and raw vitality. Grapes include gamay d’Auvergne, pinot noir and various forgotten local varieties. Viticulture is fully manual, with zero inputs and an instinctive, almost shamanic approach. The wines show wild strawberry, sour cherry, dry herbs, warm stone, gentle spice and occasionally earthy or volatile edges that belong to the estate’s free spirit. The palate is light, vibrant, mineral driven and untamed, with a distinctive airy texture. Beauger’s style is unclassifiable, raw, poetic and deeply unique, appealing above all to adventurous drinkers.
