Monthélie 1er Cru covers about 35 hectares spread over around ten climats located mainly on hillsides between Volnay and Meursault. The stony clay-limestone soils, with excellent drainage, promote precise ripening and elegant expression. Pinot Noir produces wines of racy finesse, while the rarer Chardonnay whites reveal tautness and minerality. The reds are deep ruby with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, violet, and forest floor. The whites show notes of candied lemon, white flowers, and wet stone. On the palate, Monthélie 1er Cru offers delicate structure, energy, freshness, and strong aging potential (8 to 15 years).
Food pairings
The reds pair beautifully with stuffed guinea fowl or roasted duck breast. The whites are ideal with grilled sole or creamy poultry dishes.
