Patrick Corbineau, based in Candes Saint Martin between Chinon and Saumur, is one of the Loire Valley’s most secretive and cult admired vignerons. Working alone on a few hectares of very old cabernet franc vines planted on tuffeau, sand and clay limestone, he vinifies by hand in a troglodyte cellar. Yields are tiny, harvests late, macerations long and élevage is slow and completely unmanipulated, often lasting several years. The wines show black cherry, raspberry, dried rose, blond tobacco, fine leather, forest floor and wet chalk. The palate is deep, supple, yet animated by a quiet inner energy, with melted tannins and a uniquely worn, velvety texture. It is a rare, old fashioned style in the best sense, evoking the great Loire wines of the past. Corbineau’s style is singular, touching and profoundly human.
