Jacques Selosse, based in Avize on the Côte des Blancs, is one of the most visionary and influential domaines in Champagne, shaped by Anselme Selosse’s revolutionary approach. A pioneer of biodynamics, master of barrel work and of finely controlled oxidative notes, Selosse introduced a philosophical, parcel driven and deeply sensory vision of Champagne. Grand Cru chardonnay from Avize, Cramant, Oger and Le Mesnil lies at the core of the style, with a smaller presence of pinot noir from Aÿ and Ambonnay. Fermentation is done in barrels, usually Burgundy barrels, with indigenous yeasts, followed by long élevage, subtle bâtonnage, minimal sulfur and very low dosage. The wines show aromas of dried fruits, baked apple, ripe citrus, toasted bread, honey, hazelnut, spice and warm chalk, with a perfectly integrated oxidative touch. The palate is broad, vibrant, saline and deeply complex, with tremendous energy and a hypnotic length. Selosse’s style is singular, poetic and dense, a benchmark for terroir driven Champagne.
