Domaine Combier, based in Pont de l’Isère in the heart of Crozes Hermitage, is widely admired in the northern Rhône for the purity, finesse and energy of its syrah. Organic for many years, the estate works gravelly alluvial soils, sand, clay and galets, producing bright, aromatic wines. The reds show blackberry, raspberry, violet, black pepper, olive and sometimes a hint of licorice. The palate is fresh and lifted, with fine tannins and a silky texture. Single vineyard bottlings such as Clos des Grives offer greater depth, tighter minerality and impressive aging potential. The whites, mostly from marsanne, are floral, generous yet well balanced.
