Raymond Trollat is one of the most revered and mythical figures of Saint Joseph, a discreet vigneron whose wines have since become legendary. Based in Saint Jean de Muzols, he tended tiny parcels of very old vines on steep granite slopes. His approach was entirely artisanal, uncompromising and intuitive, producing wines of remarkable purity and vibrancy. The reds showed raspberry, wild blackberry, violet, white pepper, black olive, warm stone and a subtle smoky nuance. The palate was straight, tense and energetic, with fine yet firm tannins and a granite driven structure that allowed for long aging. With time, Trollat’s wines developed notes of fine leather, delicate game, dark spice and deep emotional resonance. After his retirement, some of his parcels were taken over by the Gonon brothers, further reinforcing his cult status. Trollat represents the purest and most sincere expression of classic Saint Joseph.
