Domaine du Bel Air, located in Benais in the Bourgueil appellation, is one of the Loire Valley’s most respected cabernet franc estates, run for generations by the Gauthier family. Pierre and now Rodolphe Gauthier have developed a style defined by purity, careful ripeness and gentle extraction that highlights the grape’s natural finesse. The vineyards, many of them old vines, lie on clay, tuffeau, gravel and limestone soils that produce wines of depth and freshness. The wines show cassis, raspberry, red cherry, crushed leaf, peony, blond tobacco and wet stone. The palate is linear, juicy and generous, with fine tannins and a refreshing lift. Cuvées such as Les Vingt Lieux Dits and Clos Nouveau are among the top expressions of Bourgueil. The Bel Air style is precise, vibrant and sincere, concentrated yet never heavy.
