Domaine Jean Michel Stéphan, based in Tupin Semons within Côte Rôtie, is one of the northern Rhône’s most distinctive and heartfelt producers. Jean Michel Stéphan has always championed a natural, non interventionist approach, using whole clusters, avoiding sulphur during élevage, and seeking purity and drinkability above all. Influenced by Jules Chauvet and early natural wine thinkers, his wines are aromatic, expressive and vibrant. They show raspberry, cherry, violet, peony, gentle pepper, light smoke and occasionally a faint wild or fermentary edge. The palate is supple, fresh and fluid, with remarkably fine tannins and lively energy. Single parcel cuvées such as Côteaux de Bassenon or Côteaux de Tupin reveal greater depth and more pronounced mineral tension. Stéphan’s style represents a free, sincere and living expression of Côte Rôtie, prioritizing delicacy over power.
