Jean Louis Grippat was long regarded as one of the most talented and admired vignerons of Côte Rôtie and Saint Joseph, a quiet craftsman whose wines are today cherished as historical benchmarks of the northern Rhône. Based in Saint Jean de Muzols, he cultivated steep schist and granite parcels with a traditional and very precise hand. His Côte Rôtie wines were known for their floral finesse, showing violet, raspberry, blackberry, pepper, black olive and warm stone, with a lifted, fresh and pure palate. His Saint Joseph bottlings offered straight, delicate, granite driven syrah with fine tannins and vibrant energy. Since the domaine was absorbed by Guigal, Grippat wines have become rare and collectible, valued for their elegance and for a style that remains a symbol of a classic era.
