Marcel Juge is one of the most legendary and elusive names in Cornas, a solitary vigneron whose tiny production and fiercely artisanal approach have become part of northern Rhône lore. Working almost entirely on his own on steep granite arenas planted with old vines, Juge crafted wines of absolute authenticity, without concession or artifice. The reds showed deep aromas of wild blackberry, raspberry, pepper, black olive, violet, warm earth and occasionally a faint animale or smoky nuance. The palate was dense, taut and energetic, with firm but noble tannins and a raw power that softened only with time. With age, his wines evolved into profoundly elegant Cornas, offering layers of leather, game, dark spice and warm stone. The style of Marcel Juge represents an older, wilder, purer Cornas, shaped entirely by the hand of a man who made wine for himself, not for the market.
