La Grande Colline, founded by Hirotake Ooka, is one of the most unconventional and cult projects the Rhône has ever seen. Working on steep slopes in Saint Péray and Cornas, Ooka embraced strict biodynamics and an almost absolutist non interventionist philosophy. No corrections, no additions, no compromise. His wines, often made without sulphur, showed intensely pure red and black fruit, wild herbs, violet, pepper, warm earth and sometimes a faintly wild or fermentary edge that became part of their personality. On the palate, they were vibrant, alive, raw in energy, with a sense of movement in the texture. Some cuvées were fragile, others remarkably deep. La Grande Colline has since become a symbol of freedom, instinct and artisanal purity, and remains one of the Rhône’s most unique stylistic statements.
