Bernaudeau, referring to the work of Richard Leroy Bernaudeau in Anjou, is one of the most admired producers of dry Loire whites and a key figure in the modern revival of chenin blanc. Working on schist and quartz soils around Rablay sur Layon, he is known for meticulous organic and biodynamic viticulture, very low yields and a pursuit of absolute purity. The wines show quince, fresh apple, pear, light honey, white flowers, flint and sometimes a saline or smoky edge. The palate is taut, energetic and mineral driven, with perfectly controlled ripeness and impressive length. These are among the Loire’s most vibrant and emotionally expressive whites, capable of long aging. The Bernaudeau style is chenin at its most precise, luminous and unadorned.
