Pétrus is one of the most mythical wines on earth, defined by near mystical depth, timeless texture and aromatic intensity that transcends the conventions of Pomerol. Perched on the highest point of the plateau, the vineyard lies on a unique terroir of smectite, the rare blue clay that gives merlot unmatched density, creaminess and inherent power. Pétrus’ style is marked by extraordinarily pure aromas of black truffle, violet, deep black cherry, ripe plum, fine cocoa, noble tobacco, subtle spices and sometimes graphite or moist earth. The palate is monumental, silky and enveloping, built on tannins of unmatched finesse and concentration. Its depth is vertical, almost bottomless, carried by an inner vibrancy that animates the wine from within. The finish is endless, noble, driven by a mineral freshness that perfectly counterbalances the richness. With age, Pétrus develops astonishing complexity, blending balsamic notes, dark flowers, noble spices, truffle, fine leather and impeccable fruit purity. It is a wine of silence, contained power and absolute depth, widely regarded as the ultimate expression of merlot.
