For centuries, in the silent mists of Sauternes, a singular wine has been born. A wine whose rarity, longevity, and depth have shaped a legend admired throughout the world: Château d’Yquem.
South of Bordeaux, overlooking the village of Bommes, Château d’Yquem reigns over the landscapes of Sauternes with timeless elegance. Here, every detail seems designed to create the extraordinary: deep gravel soils, the mists of the Ciron River, and the golden light of late autumn afternoons. Château d’Yquem is unlike any other estate. The only Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification, it remains to this day an absolute reference in the world of collectible fine wines.
The history of the estate dates back several centuries. As early as the 16th century, the Sauvage d’Yquem family developed the property before the Lur-Saluces family helped elevate the estate’s reputation across Europe. Very quickly, the greatest aristocratic tables discovered the singularity of Yquem. Royal courts, tsars, and collectors all competed for these bottles that would become truly mythical.
When Napoleon III commissioned the famous 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification for the Paris Universal Exhibition, Château d’Yquem received a distinction unique in wine history: Premier Cru Supérieur. No other Sauternes estate would ever achieve such recognition, definitively confirming Yquem’s incomparable aura.
The singular identity of Château d’Yquem rests upon a fascinating natural phenomenon: Botrytis Cinerea, also known as noble rot. Thanks to the morning mists of the Ciron River and the gentle warmth of sunny afternoons, the grapes slowly concentrate in sugar, acidity, and aromas.
Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with several successive passes through the vineyards — known as “tries” — in order to select only grapes that have reached perfect maturity. This exacting standard explains the estate’s extremely low yields. A single vine produces the equivalent of just one glass of wine.
In its youth, Château d’Yquem reveals spectacular richness: candied apricot, mango, acacia honey, exotic fruits, roasted citrus, and white flowers compose a fascinating aromatic palette. With time, the wine evolves toward notes of saffron, dried fruits, beeswax, and oriental spices. The greatest vintages can age for decades while retaining an almost unreal freshness.
1950: historic nobility and exceptional rarity.
1988: masterful balance and immense ageing potential.
1998: exotic richness and profound aromatic depth.
“A great Yquem never grows old. It slowly transforms into memory.”
The estate’s iconic sweet wine, considered one of the greatest white wines in the world.
The estate’s dry white wine, crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon grapes.
In a world where everything seems to move ever faster, Château d’Yquem continues to defend a timeless vision of wine: one built on patience, rigor, and the pursuit of absolute perfection. Some vintages are simply not produced when the quality fails to meet the estate’s standards — an exceptionally rare decision that fully contributes to the Yquem legend. More than just a Sauternes, Château d’Yquem is now considered a true masterpiece of French wine heritage. Château d’Yquem is not merely a wine. It is a rare emotion, a golden light, a suspended moment in time.
