Loïc Pasquet: A Winemaker Going Against the Grain
At the origin of this remarkable project is Loïc Pasquet, a passionate winemaker who deliberately chose a radically different path. While most estates focus on refining modern winemaking techniques, he turned to the past to understand what made the greatest Bordeaux wines unique before the arrival of phylloxera. Over many years, he studied historic vineyards, archival records, and long-forgotten grape varieties. His goal is not to recreate an old wine, but to restore the original identity of the Bordeaux vineyard through respectful vineyard practices and extremely low yields.
Landiras: A Terroir Ideal for Revival
The estate is located in Landiras, within the Graves appellation, an area historically renowned for the quality of its gravelly soils. These deep gravel deposits provide excellent drainage while allowing vine roots to access essential nutrients and water during dry periods. This exceptional terroir is central to Liber Pater's identity, with wines that prioritize balance, freshness, and precision over sheer power.
The Return of Forgotten Grape Varieties and Ungrafted Vines
One of Liber Pater's greatest distinctions lies in the reintroduction of historic grape varieties that had nearly disappeared from Bordeaux vineyards. Alongside traditional varieties, Loïc Pasquet has brought back grapes such as Castets, Saint-Macaire, Tarnay, and Petite Vidure, the historical name for Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike almost all European vineyards, which have been grafted onto American rootstocks since the phylloxera epidemic, certain Liber Pater parcels are cultivated on their own roots.
