There are wine estates whose very name is enough to quicken the pulse of the world's greatest wine enthusiasts. These are properties whose bottles are not simply purchased—they are sought after, earned, and passed down through generations. At the pinnacle of this hierarchy stands the Domaine Edmond Vatan, located in Chavignol, one of the most prestigious villages within the Sancerre appellation. In a world where wine production has become increasingly industrialized, Edmond Vatan always chose the opposite path: one of patience, exceptionally low yields, and the purest possible expression of terroir. Even today, the few thousand bottles produced each year rank among the most sought-after white wines of the Loire Valley.
The History of Domaine Edmond Vatan
Born in 1929, Edmond Vatan joined his family's vineyards in the late 1940s. From an early stage, he developed a singular philosophy: let the terroir speak above all else. Inspired in particular by the Cotat brothers and traditional artisanal viticulture, he favored extremely low yields, perfectly ripe fruit, and the most natural winemaking possible. This approach gave rise to one of the world's greatest expressions of Sauvignon Blanc. In the early 2000s, Edmond Vatan voluntarily reduced the size of his estate, choosing to retain only his finest vineyard site. Since 2007–2008, his daughter Anne Vatan-Foucault has carried on his work with the same uncompromising pursuit of perfection. Through her husband, Nadège Foucault, who is also connected to the legendary Clos Rougeard, she continues a tradition that has achieved cult status among collectors worldwide.
The Monts Damnés Terroir: The Soul of Clos de la Néore
An Exceptional Terroir in Chavignol
Today, Domaine Edmond Vatan focuses its entire production on a tiny vineyard parcel located on the famous slope of the Monts Damnés, widely regarded as the finest vineyard site in the entire Sancerre appellation. Its Kimmeridgian marl soils, rich in clay, limestone, and marine fossils, impart remarkable minerality to Sauvignon Blanc. They produce wines of extraordinary tension, capable of aging gracefully for several decades while developing complex aromas of beeswax, honey, flint, and candied fruit.
The Estate's Wine
Clos de la Néore is currently the estate's sole wine.

The wine captivates with its exceptional purity, seemingly endless finish, and striking minerality, making it one of the world's benchmark expressions of Sauvignon Blanc. Some recent vintages have even been released primarily in Magnum format to maximize their aging potential.
Before drastically reducing the size of his vineyard, Edmond Vatan also produced a Sancerre Rouge made from Pinot Noir. This wine is no longer produced, and the few remaining bottles have become highly coveted collector's items among enthusiasts of mature vintages.
